Kaepernick remained unsigned when he became a free agent following the 2016 season. Reid's contract with the 49ers expired following the 2017 season, and he remained unsigned throughout the summer.

About 90 minutes after the Panthers announced the deal with the veteran safety, Kaepernick posted a congratulatory message on Twitter.
