Chase Young or Nick Bosa? No. 2 NFL draft picks' answer will come on field

An edge rusher from Ohio State who was selected No. 2 overall in the NFL draft, only behind the reigning Heisman Trophy winner.

Wait, are we talking about Nick Bosa or Chase Young?

That's exactly the point.

Though separated by one year coming out of college, the two players had fairly similar résumés upon entering the NFL. Bosa lived up to his potential in being named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in his first season with the 49ers. After selecting him No. 2 overall in the 2020 NFL Draft on Thursday night, Washington is hoping Young continues to follow the same path.

So, it begs the question: Which former Buckeye will make the best pro?

Young obviously has yet to play a down in the NFL, so this is all projection. But based on Bosa's own assessment of Young, Washington landed a great player.

"I’d tell them he has got Jadeveon Clowney’s athletic ability, with Coach [Larry] Johnson’s tutelage," Bosa described Young to The Athletic's Matt Barrows. "And that’s a pretty scary combination. And what makes him different than most people like him is he is super hungry to be the best."

Whoa. If Bosa is anywhere near as good of a scout as he is a football player, Washington just landed a perennial All-Pro.

In terms of Young's greatest strength, Bosa marvels at his ability to get off the line.

"He has got the twitchy get-off you can’t teach," he said. "Like, I have to jump off the ball perfectly to get a good get-off. He’s just got that crazy, freakish athleticism, and then he’s super strong, too."

While Young doesn't really have any holes in his game, Bosa believes his ex-teammate could improve as a power rusher.

"I think he’ll be able to get 10-plus sacks a year just off of speed rushes," Bosa said. "But I think where I found out -- I don’t have the speed that he has -- but I found out that power needs to be in your repertoire because these tackles are really athletic. And if you’re just sticking to one thing and if you don’t set up your moves, you might have a rough day.

"So, I think for him -- he’s already so developed in his finesse game, I feel like he needs to work on implementing some different types of power moves."

While Bosa is no slouch in the speed department, his power is his greatest weapon. He used it to accumulate nine sacks as a rookie, and his best days still are very much ahead of him. One could argue Bosa was the 49ers' best defensive player last year, particularly as the season progressed.

As great as Young projects to be, it certainly will be a challenge to live up to Bosa's standard.
