Braylon Edwards steps up for college kids

Wide receiver Braylon Edwards is having a tough year for the 49ers, but his generosity is making life easier and college possible for 79 students. According to Yahoo's Shutdown Corner blog, Edwards committed to 100 Cleveland area eighth graders in 2005 that he'd donate 10K in scholarships for each student if they could graduate high school with a 2.5 GPA or above, and give 15 hours of community service.
79 students met Edwards' criteria and are beginning their first year of college in 2011. Students are attending schools in Ohio and all over the country, including institutions such as Harvard, Cornell and Johns Hopkins. The story also says Edwards provided laptops and supplies as the students began their first year in school. Edwards is in the middle of a one-year, 1 million contract with the 49ers -- just about what he'll be donating as part of the Advance 100 program he began with his mother in 2005.
Edwards, hampered by shoulder and knee injuries, has played in just eight games this season for San Francisco. He has 14 receptions for 172 total yards.
