San Francisco 49ers outside linebacker Ahmad Brooks will not play Sunday against the New York Giants due to the death of his 40-year-old sister, Brooks’ agent said on Thursday.
Brooks’ agent, Gregory R. Williams, said Brooks’ sister, Krsunthia Brooks-Childs, died of lupus on Wednesday. Brooks is in Louisiana with his family. The memorial service has not been scheduled. Williams told CSN Bay Area that Brooks plans to return to the 49ers early next week and is likely to be available to play Oct. 18 against the Baltimore Ravens at Levi's Stadium.
Brooks was excused from practice Wednesday for a family issue, 49ers coach Jim Tomsula said. Earlier in the day on Thursday, 49ers defensive coordinator Eric Mangini said it was too early to know whether Brooks would be available to play in Sunday's game. Mangini said it was important for Brooks to be with his family.

"With this situation, we’ll really just have to see how it goes at the end of the week," Mangini said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Ahmad, and we’ll see how it goes. Knowing Ahmad and the way that he’s worked, he’s someone I feel comfortable with to pick things up quickly and contribute, but it (playing in the game) is really secondary right now."
