INDIANAPOLIS – The 49ers’ run of bad luck on coin tosses ended on Friday at the NFL Scouting Combine.
The 49ers won the flip over the Raiders to secure the No. 9 overall pick in the NFL draft. The Raiders will select No. 10 overall.
A coin flip was used to determine the draft order after both Bay Area teams finished with records of 6-10. The Miami Dolphins also finished 6-10, but they will pick 11th overall based on their stronger strength of schedule. The 49ers and Raiders had identical strengths of schedule.

While the 49ers finished the season with five consecutive victories, the club lost the pregame coin toss on each of those occasions.
Hall of Fame defensive back Rod Woodson, who played for both the 49ers and Raiders throughout his career, flipped the coin. It was not a standard coin. The NFL created a coin with a 49ers logo on one side and a Raiders logo on the other.
General manager John Lynch represented the 49ers, while coach Jon Gruden and GM Reggie McKenzie were on hand on the bench-press platform for the Raiders.
Teams with the same record rotate spots in each round of the draft. The 49ers’ original draft position in the second round is No. 43 overall. The 49ers traded that draft pick to the New England Patriots in October for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
