49ers vs. Cardinals live: Score, highlights, analysis in NFL Week 5 game

FINAL, Cardinals 28-18: Arizona recovers the onside kick, then runs out the clock on its first win of the season.

The 49ers fall to 1-4, as mistakes haunt them. C.J. Beathard completes 34 of 54 passes for a career-high 349 yards, but his two interceptions halted any comeback hopes.

At least the 49ers received good news on running back Matt Breida …

Fourth quarter, 1:29, Cardinals 28-18: C.J. Beathard draws the 49ers a little closer by scoring a touchdown on a 1-yard QB sneak, but George Kittle drops the two-point conversion pass, keeping it a two-score game.

Officials originally gave Victor Bolden a touchdown on a catch at the 1, but that call was overturned. Beathard scored on the next play.

Fourth quarter, 3:49, Cardinals 21-12: Desperation time for the 49ers means another turnover, as C.J. Beathard throws an interception to Bene Benwikere on fourth-and-19 in their own territory.

Safe to say this one’s over, barring a huge Cardinals mistake.

Fourth quarter, 4:33, Cardinals 21-12: Disaster for the 49ers, as Haason Reddick swats the ball out of C.J. Beathard’s hand, and Josh Bynes scoops it up and returns it 23 yards for a touchdown.

San Francisco has four turnovers. Hard to win a game like that.

Fourth quarter, 5:50, Cardinals 14-12: Another three-and-out for the Cardinals, as the 49ers bring pressure on rookie QB Josh Rosen, who’s now 10-of-25 passing and has missed some open receivers.

49ers’ ball at their 32, needing just a field goal to take the lead.

Fourth quarter, 6:51, Cardinals 14-12: We have a touchdown!

After Cole Wick drops a third-down pass in the end zone, the 49ers go for it, and C.J. Beathard hits a diving Trent Taylor for six points.

Chandler Jones prevents it from being a tie game, though, as he swats Beathard’s screen pass to Pierre Garcon on the two-point conversion attempt.

That Robbie Gould missed PAT looms large now …

Fourth quarter, 12:37, Cardinals 14-6: The 49ers’ defense is doing its best to give the offense a chance to tie this game.

The Cardinals drive to the 49ers’ 42, but the D holds and forces a punt.

Now it’s San Francisco ball at its 17. Let’s see if the 49ers can give the Levi’s Stadium scoreboard operator something to do …

Fourth quarter, 14:52, Cardinals 14-6: As if the 49ers needed something else to go wrong, Robbie Gould pushes a 45-yard field goal attempt wide right, and the team comes up empty after a time-consuming drive.

Before that miss, Gould had made a 49ers-record 33 consecutive field goal tries.

End of the third quarter, Cardinals 14-6: Don’t look now, but the 49ers are driving …

Fifteen minutes to go, and San Francisco has second-and-8 at the Arizona 25.

Third quarter, 6:19, Cardinals 14-6: As much as the 49ers’ offense has struggled, so has the Cardinals’.

Josh Rosen misses a wide-open Ricky Seals-Jones on third down, and the Chandler Jones strip-sack doesn’t produce points for Arizona.

Now it’s 49ers ball at their own 10. Ninty yards seems like an impossible task for both offenses today.

Third quarter, 8:46, Cardinals 14-6: Double whammy for the 49ers just now.

First, C.J. Beathard fumbles the ball away on a Chandler Jones strip-sack, and the Cardinals recover it near midfield.

Then the 49ers learn running back Matt Breida, their top offensive weapon, won’t come back today.

Third quarter, 13:03, Cardinals 14-6: Still no offense for Arizona. Now it’s San Francisco’s turn to try to break the lull.

49ers’ ball at their own 19.

Halftime, Cardinals 14-6: Arizona goes no-huddle and tries to make it to field-goal range, but no dice. The teams go to their respective locker rooms with little offensive momentum.

The Cardinals will receive the second-half kickoff.

Second quarter, 3:43, Cardinals 14-6: The 49ers punt, then the Cardinals do, too. Both offenses aren’t doing much of anything.

Second quarter, 7:38, Cardinals 14-6: Arizona can’t move the football, then commits fair-catch interference on the punt.

First-and-10 for the 49ers at their 36.

Second quarter, 9:31, Cardinals 14-6: Pierre Garcon returned to the field on this drive, but the 49ers go three-and-out.

After the punt, the Cardinals have the ball at their 28.

Second quarter, 11:00, Cardinals 14-6: Arizona quickly cashes in the turnover, as David Johnson barely stretches the ball to the goal line for a 2-yard touchdown run.

Adrian Colbert stood up Johnson near the line, but the running back just snuck the ball to the line.

Second quarter, 13:18, Cardinals 7-6: Raheem Mostert, pressed into service because of Matt Breida’s injury, fumbles the ball at the Cardinals’ 38, where Patrick Peterson scoops it up and returns it to the 49ers’ 18.

Would’ve been six if not for a touchdown-saving tackle by quarterback C.J. Beathard.

End of the first quarter, Cardinals 7-6: The 49ers’ already banged-up offense are looking at injuries to running back Matt Breida and wide receiver Pierre Garcon in this game.

First quarter, 3:00, Cardinals 7-6: The 49ers’ defense holds again and give the ball to their offense at their 10 after the Cardinals’ punt.

First quarter, 5:31, Cardinals 7-6: The 49ers can’t muster much offense after two Matt Breida runs take them to the 26.

San Francisco’s punt, combined with an Arizona penalty, puts the Cardinals at their own 40.

The 49ers might have some injury concerns, too, with wide receiver Pierre Garcon being checked out on the bench.

First quarter, 7:21, Cardinals 7-6: The 49ers’ defense stands tall, as the Cardinals’ offense goes three-and-out.

After the punt, San Francisco has the ball at its 5.

First quarter, 8:21, Cardinals 7-6: C.J. Beathard’s pass deflects off Pierre Garcon and into the hands of the Cardinals' Tre Boston, who returns it to the 49ers’ 43.

As promising as the 49ers’ first drive was, the game quickly has turned.

First quarter, 9:39, Cardinals 7-6: Josh Rosen’s first play is a 75-yard touchdown pass to Christian Kirk, who sprints free down the middle of the field after 49ers safety Adrian Colbert blows the coverage.

Arizona converts the extra-point attempt and now had the lead. Not a great start for San Francisco’s defense.

First quarter, 9:49, 49ers 6-0: C.J. Beathard and the 49ers’ offense opens the game with a statement drive, going 74 yards on eight plays and scoring a touchdown on a 5-yard shovel pass to Matt Breida.

The 49ers bobble the extra-point snap, though, and can’t convert.

The Cardinals’ defense might have been a little too eager at the start.

First quarter, 15:00, 0-0: The Cardinals won the toss and deferred, so the 49ers receive the opening kickoff.

12:08 p.m.: Here are the Cardinals inactive players:
