49ers’ Trent Williams trade made Rams’ Sean McVay want to pound beers

After wiping away tears Saturday from Joe Staley's retirement, 49ers fans quickly went back to rejoicing. The NFC champions replaced Staley, a six-time Pro Bowl left tackle, with Trent Williams, a seven-time Pro Bowl left tackle.

Some people weren't as happy as The Faithful, though. That includes Rams head coach Sean McVay. In fact, the trade made him want to throw back a few cold ones to make the news slightly less frustrating.

McVay is more than familiar with Williams' talent. Before becoming the Rams' head coach, McVay served various coaching roles with Washington. His first year as an offensive assistant in Washington was 2010, the same year the team selected Williams with the No. 4 pick in the draft.

Now, McVay's Rams will have to face Williams twice next season.

The 49ers acquired Williams from Washington for a 2020 fifth-round pick and 2021 third-round pick. The 31-year-old has played every game at left tackle since entering the NFL. He played his first four NFL seasons with Mike Shanahan as coach and Kyle Shanahan, the 49ers' current head coach, as offensive coordinator.

Williams didn’t suit up in any games last year while working through a holdout and the removal of a cancerous growth on his skull. Prior to that, he made the Pro Bowl every year from 2012 through 2018.
