DeAndre Smelter is getting a promotion.
The 49ers will activate the wide receiver to the 53-man roster, his agency tweeted on Tuesday morning.
The move will officially happen once the team places Quinton Patton on injured reserve.
On Monday, Chip Kelly announced that Patton sustained a season-ending foot injury against the Falcons.

San Francisco selected Smelter in the fourth round of the 2015 draft out of Georgia Tech.
As CSNBayArea.com's Matt Maiocco wrote on Oct. 20:
"Smelter was inactive as a rookie last season as he rehabilitated from a torn ACL that cut short his final year of college ball. And the 49ers never really got a chance to see what he could do during the offseason program and training camp due to a hamstring injury.
After he was waived in September, Smelter went unclaimed and never signed with another team. The 49ers brought him back this week to take a spot on the team’s practice squad.
Said 49ers coach Chip Kelly, “It was one of those deals is that you never saw enough of him to really make an accurate decision on, ‘Hey, can he really contribute and help? So, let’s give him an opportunity when he’s healthy.’”
Offensive coordinator Curtis Modkins announced on Tuesday that the 49ers will be bringing wide receiver DiAndre Campbell back to the practice squad.
