49ers snap count: Solomon Thomas, Dante Pettis see limited time in Week 1

In the 49ers’ rotation of defensive linemen and wide receivers, Solomon Thomas and Dante Pettis found themselves mostly on the sideline in the team’s 31-17 season-opening victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

Thomas played the eighth-most among the 49ers’ defensive lineman, getting on the field for just 12 of the 49ers’ 70 defensive plays. Pettis, who returned to practice last week from a groin issue, played just two snaps.

“He had health issues, so that’s why he missed a week of practice,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said of Pettis. “He just got cleared to come back on Monday, so he was a little behind the eight-ball on that. He didn’t start the game and we didn’t have a ton of long drives where we got into the substitutional flow.”

Pettis, a second-round pick in 2018, caught one pass for 7 yards, while rookie Deebo Samuel and Marquise Goodwin were in the starting lineup.

Samuel played 60 snaps, caught three passes for 17 yards in his NFL debut. He lost a fumble at the end of the first half, but also caught a pass from Jimmy Garoppolo for a successful two-point conversion late in the game.

Thomas was the No. 3 overall pick in the 2017 draft. On Sunday, he was No. 8 among the team’s defensive linemen, behind DeForest Buckner, Arik Armstead, Dee Ford, Nick Bosa, D.J. Jones, Ronald Blair and Sheldon Day.
