The 49ers on Wednesday announced the signing of veteran linebacker Korey Toomer to a one-year contract.
Toomer, who started eight games each of the past two seasons with the Chargers, joins a group of 49ers inside linebackers that includes Reuben Foster, Brock Coyle and Malcolm Smith.
"We’re excited to add a talented player like Korey to our defensive unit," 49ers general manager John Lynch said in a statement. "Korey is a good fit for the 'stack linebacker' position in our scheme and he provides our team another good football player with plenty of NFL experience in similar systems."

Toomer (6-foot-2, 235 pounds) has experience playing middle linebacker and weakside linebacker. He was originally a fifth-round selection of the Seattle Seahawks in 2012.
Toomer did not see any action in regular-season games with the Seahawks. After Seattle released him, he saw NFL action the past four seasons with Dallas, the St. Louis Rams and Raiders before going to the Chargers in 2016.
Toomer has appeared in 46 games with 16 starts. He has 115 career tackles, two sacks, one interception, which he returned for a touchdown, five forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and four passes defensed. He is also a contributor on special teams.
Toomer is the second player from the Chargers' defense the 49ers have signed this offseason. The 49ers also signed defensive end Jeremiah Attaochu to a one-year contract. Both players spent last season in the system of defensive coordinator Gus Bradley. San Francisco's defensive coordinator, Robert Saleh, served as an assistant under Bradley in Seattle and Jacksonville.
