49ers report card: Grades on offense, defense in dominant win over Raiders

SANTA CLARA -- Nick Mullens grabbed the headlines, but the quarterback wasn't alone.

The 49ers had an all-around dominant performance Thursday night against the moribund Raiders at Levi’s Stadium.

The 49ers, a team that already has lost twice this season to the Arizona Cardinals, clobbered the Raiders 34-3 and snapped a six-game losing streak.

Here are the 49ers’ grades from their beat-down of the Raiders in the final matchup as Bay Area rivals before the Silver and Black slips off to Vegas:

Rushing offense

The 49ers got yards, big and small, on the ground against the Raiders. Raheem Mostert put the game away with a 52-yard scamper through the Oakland secondary with right tackle Mike McGlinchey out front leading the way -- the entire way -- into the end zone. Subtract Mullens’ four attempts for minus-3 yards, and the 49ers averaged 5.2 yards per rushing attempt.

Passing offense

Mullens did a remarkable job in his first start, and he had a lot of help along the way. The offensive line did a good job of protecting him, and Mullens got the ball out quickly. The 49ers did not yield any sacks.

Other than a drop from Richie James, the receivers were about as good as it gets. James had a 53-yard catch earlier in the game. Tight end George Kittle had another strong game with four catches for 108 yards and one touchdown.

Grade: A

Rushing defense

The Raiders gained some yards on the ground, but it really did not matter. After all, the 49ers’ defense kept the Raiders out of the end zone altogether. Doug Martin gained 49 yards on 11 carries to lead the Raiders. Fred Warner had a solid game for the 49ers with a team-high seven tackles.

Grade: B-plus

Passing defense

Raiders quarterback Derek Carr had a 99.5 passer rating, but the 49ers’ defense will take this kind of game any time. The pass rush was the best it has been all season. Cassius Marsh recorded 2.5 of the team’s season-high eight sacks.

The 49ers entered the game with just 16 sacks in the first eight games. The secondary of Richard Sherman, Ahkello Witherspoon, Jimmie Ward and Tyvis Powell had solid performances to keep the Raiders out of the end zone.

Grade: A

Special teams

The 49ers definitely won the battle of special teams, beginning with Bradley Pinion’s net average of 48 yards on his three punts. Kicker Robbie Gould was called on for only one field-goal attempt, and he was good from 39 yards out. The Raiders’ special teams struggled with a missed field goal, and a net punting average of 36.5 yards.

Grade: A

Overall

Coach Kyle Shanahan receives high marks for his preparation of the team this week. He prescribed 10 hours of sleep per night for his team, as they returned after the tough loss in Arizona to play on a short week. He never had his team run more than 50 percent speed in their walk-through practices.

As a result, the 49ers looked fresh and fast. On top of that, Shanahan completely out-schemed Raiders defensive coordinator Paul Guenther, and defensive coordinator Robert Saleh got the better of Jon Gruden. It was a thoroughly dominant performance, as the 49ers recorded their most decisive victory in Shanahan’s two seasons as coach. It was also the team's largest victory margin since a 41-10 win in Jacksonville in 2013.
