49ers report card: Grades for offense, defense in blowout loss to Seahawks

SEATTLE -- The 49ers’ futility in Seattle continued.

The 49ers on Sunday rolled up 452 total yards, but they were held to fewer than 20 points for the 11th consecutive time on the road against the Seahawks.

It was more of the same for the 49ers, 43-16 losers to the Seahawks. The 49ers committed three turnovers and did not have any takeaways.

The 49ers fell to 2-10 on the season, so their grades from Sunday's game should come as no surprise:

Rushing offense

Undrafted rookie Jeff Wilson ran hard. He gained 61 yards on 15 carries, but he also had a costly fumble. Sure, it probably should not have been ruled as a fumble. A replay review, however, did not produce a clear evidence to overturn the call. But a fumble is a fumble.

Matt Breida had a rough go of it. He aggravated an ankle injury and managed just 6 yards on five carries. The 49ers averaged just 2.9 yards per rushing attempt.

Passing offense

Nick Mullens threw for a career-high 414 yards, with all but 114 of them coming in the second half when the game was out of reach. Rookie wide receiver Dante Pettis had his breakout game with five catches for 129 yards and two touchdowns.

Mullens threw an interception that Seattle linebacker Bobby Wagner returned 98 yards for a touchdown. Mullens also was sacked three times for minus-28 yards.

Grade: C

Rushing Defense

The run defense generally has been good, but not on Sunday. The Seahawks drilled the 49ers on the ground, rolling up 168 rushing yards with a 5.8-yard average. Rookie Rashaad Penny gained 65 yards and scored one touchdown on just seven rushing attempts.

Grade: F

Passing Defense

Russell Wilson did not complete many passes. But of his 11 completed passes, four of them went for touchdowns. Wilson had just 185 yards passing and a passer rating of 140.9.

DeForest Buckner registered two sacks, but the 49ers had another difficult time containing Wilson, who bought time to find open receivers. K'Waun Williams, Malcolm Smith and Richard Sherman yielded touchdowns in coverage. Antone Exum had a 43-yard pass interference penalty. Williams and Ahkello Witherspoon also were called for PI.

Grade: F

Special Teams

This game was a disaster for special teams, beginning with Richie James’ muffed punt, which resulted in a turnover. The 49ers gifted the Seahawks a touchdown within the first 16 seconds of the second half, with Tyler Lockett breaking free on an 84-yard kickoff return. The Seahawks scored on the next play.

Grade: F

Overall

The 49ers have an extreme shortage of good, healthy players. After a lot of narrow losses earlier in the season, they're now at the point where they're having a difficult time competing.

Pettis' play in the past two games is a bright spot, but the 49ers are simply undermanned at so many other positions. This is a bad team, and they're getting worse.
