49ers, Raiders offseason target Vontae Davis retires … at halftime

UPDATE (3:42 p.m.): Davis explained his decision to retire in a lengthy statement. This story has been updated to reflect that.

Bills cornerback Vontae Davis returned the locker room at halftime -- and never came back.

That's because the 30-year-old retired at halftime, a fact he confirmed in a statement posted on the NFL's Twitter account.

Before Davis released his statement, Bills linebacker Lorenzo Alexander told reporters at Ralph Wilson Stadium that he had never seen anything like it.

"I meant no disrespect to my teammates and coaches," Davis wrote. "But I hold myself to a standard. Mentally, I always expect myself to play at a high level.  But physically, I know today that isn't possible, and I had an honest moment with myself.  While I was on the field, I just didn't feel right, and I told the coaches, 'I'm not feeling like myself.' "

One half after a 47-3 shellacking at the hands of the Baltimore Ravens, the Bills trailed the Los Angeles Chargers 28-6 at halftime.

"I also wondered: Do I want to keep sacrificing," Davis continued. "And truthfully, I do not because the season is long, and it's more imporant for me and my family to walk away healthy than to willfully embrace the warrior mentality and limp away too late."

The cousin of former 49ers tight end Vernon Davis, Vontae Davis visited with the 49ers and Raiders this offseason, but he chose instead to join the Bills after six seasons with the Indianapolis Colts. Davis started his career with the Miami Dolphins, playing three seasons for the franchise that drafted him No. 25 overall.
