49ers' Raheem Mostert proving to be more than just special teams ace

DENVER – Raheem Mostert already figured to be a major contributor on the 49ers during the regular season because of his exemplary special teams play.

And he is continuing to show that he has plenty of offensive skills, too.

Mostert was the 49ers’ best offensive player Monday night in a 24-15 victory over the Denver Broncos, carrying the ball six times for 58 yards, including a 30-yard touchdown run. He also caught two passes for 42 yards.

“I just go out there and try to prove myself and show everyone I can play running back and just give it the best of my ability,” Mostert said on the 49ers Insider Podcast. “That’s what I always try to do.”

Mostert is part of a deep and speedy group of 49ers running backs. He is competing for action in the backfield with presumptive starter Tevin Coleman and Matt Breida, who led the 49ers in rushing last season.

Jerick McKinnon, the team’s top free-agent pickup of 2018, has yet to enter the competition as he continues to recover from a torn ACL that wiped out his entire first season with the club. The 49ers hope McKinnon will be available when the regular season begins.

“I just try to take it one week at a time, just try to prove my worth to the best of my abilities and try to help my teammates out,” Mostert said. “Because I don’t know where I’m going to fall as far as the running back depth, but I just want to just go out there and give it my all.”

Mostert appeared in nine games last season and moved into a significant role in the 49ers’ offense. He had 34 carries for 261 yards with a 7.7-yard average before sustaining a gruesome fractured right forearm in a Thursday night game against the Raiders. Mostert has a plate in his forearm with 14 or 16 screws, he said.

Mostert said he had a little hesitation when he entered the game Monday night, but that quickly went away after he got into the flow of the game.
