The 49ers on Thursday announced the anticipated promotion of Al Guido to team president, the position Paraag Marathe held for the past two years.
Marathe's new position is the 49ers’ chief strategy officer and executive vice president of football operations. He also becomes a managing partner in the investment entity created by the York family, according to the team.
The 49ers announced new organizational roles for four other team executives. Marathe is the only individual among those with new roles to have any impact on the football side of the organization. As CSNBayArea.com first reported in December, Marathe will continue to be in charge of the team’s salary cap, contract negotiations and analytics.

He will continue to work closely with general manager Trent Baalke and coach Chip Kelly, CEO Jed York said.

“After many successful years running our business and leading our new stadium efforts, culminating in the opening of Levi’s Stadium and hosting Super Bowl 50, Paraag has chosen to step away from the day-to-day business operations of the team and partner with me, and my family, as we focus on new investments and ventures,” York said in a statement. “On the team side, he will continue to report directly to me and have a significant role in major strategic decisions for the club as Chief Strategy Officer. Paraag will continue to serve in his long-respected role as the team’s chief contract negotiator, working alongside Trent and Chip within all football operations.”
According to the 49ers, the roles of Guido and Marathe have been in transition for a year with Guido assuming the day-to-day control of the team’s business operations, including the management of Levi’s Stadium and team sponsorships.

“The 49ers business operations team will continue to be in great hands with Al,” York said. “Not only has he proven his value to this organization by leading a record-setting sales campaign for Levi’s Stadium, but he has also spearheaded the development of a 365-day-a-year experience at the venue, rivaling that of any other sports and entertainment facility in the world. Al has a tremendous feel for what the ‘Faithful’ want and deserve from our organization, and I am extremely confident in his ability to deliver on that great responsibility.”
Under Guido's leadership, the construction of Levi’s Stadium fell under budget with lower public debt than projected, the team announced. The stadium delivered $2.8 million to the City of Santa Clara general fund from non-NFL event revenue in the first eight months of operations, according to the 49ers.
The 49ers also announced new roles for executives Ethan Casson, Hannah Gordon, Brano Perkovich and Scott Sabatino.
Casson has been named chief operating officer, the position Guido formerly held since January 2014; Perkovich becomes the team’s chief investment officer; Gordon will serve as general counsel; and Sabatino is the new chief financial officer.
Sabatino takes over for Cipora Herman, who has been in transition out of a day-to-day role with the 49ers to focus on her family and charitable interests in the Bay Area, according to the team. She will continue to work with the 49ers as a consultant to Sabatino.
Perkovich and Marathe will report directly to York, while each of the other team executives will report to Guido, according to the team.
