49ers meet with D-lineman prospect Quinnen Williams at Alabama Pro Day

The bulk of the 49ers' personnel department was at Alabama’s Pro Day on Tuesday to check out defensive lineman prospect Quinnen Williams, who is projected to be a top-five pick in the NFL draft.

It's one of biggest pro days of the offseason, so it makes sense that both general manager John Lynch and vice president of player personnel Adam Peters were sighted in Tuscaloosa.

Lynch and Peters strolled to the weight room after drills were over to meet with Williams, NBC Sports Bay Area has learned. The 49ers have been more heavily linked to pass rushers Nick Bosa of Ohio State and Josh Allen of Kentucky, but Williams still could be a target with the No. 2 overall pick.

Williams had a great performance at the NFL Scouting Combine and reportedly did not participate on the field. He also recently had finger surgery and wants to be ready for OTAs.

Williams, at 6-foot-3 and 303 pounds, ran a 4.83 40-yard dash and had a vertical of 30.5 inches. In his two seasons at Alabama, he racked up 10 sacks and 19.5 tackles for a loss. He also recorded 56 tackles, 35 of which were solo.

The 49ers added pass rusher Dee Ford to the defense last week, which could give the team more options with the No. 2 pick. The team expects Ford to help the challenged pass rush, and improve the lowest turnover margin total in the league from 2018.

The 2019 draft class is deep at talented edge rushers, led by Bosa and Allen.

The 49ers also could trade back and still get a player who could complement Ford on the other side of the field and allow DeForest Buckner to flourish, such as Mississippi State's Montez Sweat. The team got a close look at Sweat during its week coaching at the Senior Bowl.

Williams has meetings set with several other teams who have picks in the top 10 of the draft, including the New York Giants, who met with him Monday night.
