49ers legend Montana to toss coin before Super Bowl 50

SAN FRANCISCO -- Joe Montana will do something Sunday afternoon that was uncommon during his playing days.

Montana’s opening toss, if executed properly, will hit the ground at Levi’s Stadium prior to Super Bowl 50. Montana, the three-time Super Bowl MVP, will toss the coin before the opening kickoff of Sunday’s game between the Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos.

The NFL announced Thursday that six Bay Area greats will participate in the pregame coin toss. The other Super Bowl MVPs scheduled to be present on the field for the ceremony are Jerry Rice, Steve Young, Jim Plunkett, Fred Biletnikoff and Marcus Allen.

Montana completed 68 percent of his pass attempts during the 49ers' four Super Bowl victories. He also holds the career Super Bowl record with a 127.8 passer rating. Plunkett is second at 122.8.
