49ers' Jerick McKinnon, Deebo Samuel running routes, training together

This is a sight Jimmy Garoppolo certainly would love to see. When healthy, 49ers running back Jerick McKinnon is an absolute problem for opposing defenses.

That's a big if, though. In this training video posted by Footwork King, McKinnon looks sharp running routes and catching passes.

McKinnon, who has missed the last two seasons due to a torn ACL, originally was slated to make $6.8 million in salary and bonuses this season. But he agreed to a $910,000 base salary this offseason, which could be a steal if he can stay on the field.

Tevin Coleman led all 49ers running backs with 21 receptions last season. He and fellow running back Raheem Mostert each had 180 receiving yards. Four 49ers running back -- Coleman, Mostert, Matt Breida and Jeff Wilson Jr. -- combined for 57 receptions and 514 yards last season. McKinnon caught 51 passes for 421 yards the last time he played a full regular season in 2017.

His dual-threat ability is exactly what coach Kyle Shanahan dreams about. McKinnon also is working out in Houston with another versatile offensive weapon: 49ers receiver Deebo Samuel.

After an impressive rookie year, Samuel is looking to step in as the 49ers' No. 1 receiver. The recently-retired Joe Staley believes Samuel can do that and more in Year 2 as well.

“Basically, he’s one of the most talented rookies I’ve ever seen,” Staley told Chris Biderman of The Sacramento Bee.  “I was just telling him how important this offseason is and he can be the greatest receiver in the NFL. Just to work really hard this offseason and use this as motivation.”

That's high praise from such a respected Niner. Samuel clearly has listened to Staley and is getting after it this offseason.

With these two players on the field, the Shanahan and Garoppolo can feast on defenses whenever this season begins.
