49ers injury report: Sherman, Garnett will sit out week, preseason opener

SANTA CLARA – Cornerback Richard Sherman will sit out a week of practice and will not suit up for the team’s exhibition opener Thursday against the Dallas Cowboys.

Sherman experienced hamstring tightness during practice on Friday. He will rest this week and "progress back next week," according to the team.

Also, guard Joshua Garnett will continue to be out of action this week and will be re-evaluated next week to determine if he can get back on the practice field.

Garnett is not believed to have any structural damage to his right knee, which he banged during a practice July 28. He has not practiced since sustaining the bruise. Coach Kyle Shanahan said on Wednesday he was surprised Garnett was not back at practice, an indication the club has cleared him to resume on-field work.

But Garnett also received a second medical opinion, and appears to be prepared to sit out multiple weeks to allow for a full recovery of the knee. An injury to the same knee last summer landed him on injured reserve last season.

Garnett received praise from Shanahan and general manager John Lynch in the offseason for the work he put in during the season to reshape his body and increase his agility to play in Shanahan’s scheme.

The 49ers have a competition at right guard. Veteran Jonathan Cooper, whom the 49ers signed in the offseason, has yet to take part in 11-on-11 practice work. Mike Person and Erik Magnuson have taken part in every practice and are candidates for the starting job, too.
