INDIANAPOLIS – Anthony Davis’ possible return to the 49ers after announcing a hiatus from the NFL last June remains just a possibility, according to general manager Trent Baalke.

“I’ve had some contract with him, but I have no idea what the status is at this point in time,” Baalke said Wednesday at the NFL Scouting Combine. “He’s got to apply for reinstatement to the league.”

Davis, the 49ers’ starting right tackle from 2010 to ’14, walked away from the game last year in order to let his mind and body heal, he said. He has guaranteed on social media that he will attempt to return to the NFL this season. Davis played in only seven games in 2014 due to a variety of injuries, including a concussion.

Davis, 26, remains as property of the 49ers, but his contract is not active until he submits papers to the league office to be reinstated off the reserve/retired list. The 49ers open their offseason program on April 4, and clearly the 49ers would want him to take part if he is serious about making a comeback.

“Right now, that contract is being tolled,” Baalke said. “It’s just sitting there. It’s like the Internet cloud. It’s just up there.”

Baalke said he has not seen Davis, so he has no idea whether he is working out and is close to being in football shape.
