49ers' George Kittle has bone chip in ankle, Kyle Shanahan confirms

George Kittle's ankle injury kept him out the last two games, and for good reason.

Kittle has been playing with a bone chip in his ankle and a popped capsule in his knee, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed Sunday after San Francisco's 37-8 win over the Packers at Levi's Stadium.

ESPN's Adam Schefter originally reported Kittle had a broken ankle Sunday morning, citing league sources. Kittle suffered the injury in the 49ers' win over the Cardinals on Halloween.

Despite the injuries, Kittle suited up Sunday night against the Packers and had a massive impact. The star tight end hauled in six passes for 129 yards, including a 61-yard touchdown.

Though Kittle's pain management has drawn praise from his teammates, it's unclear how the injury will affect him down the stretch, but if Sunday's performance is any indication, he'll be just fine.

San Francisco will play the AFC North-leading Baltimore Ravens and NFC South-leading New Orleans Saints after over the next two weeks. Those defenses have allowed the ninth- and 11th-fewest receiving yards to tight ends, respectively.

Kittle will need to be at his best playing through what reportedly is significant pain.
