49ers cut Tom Savage after four days to make room for defensive back

Due to a shortage of healthy cornerbacks for Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams, the 49ers on Saturday added to their depth in the secondary.

The club promoted defensive back Tyvis Powell from the practice squad as insurance. Cornerback Jimmie Ward is not expected to play due to a hamstring injury.

Moreover, Richard Sherman (calf), K’Waun Williams (shoulder) and Ahkello Witherspoon (concussion) are listed as questionable. Witherspoon is expected to be cleared to start Sunday.

The 49ers released veteran quarterback Tom Savage to make room for Powell. Savage signed with the 49ers on Tuesday. The 49ers are likely to re-sign him when the health on their 53-man roster allows them to keep a third quarterback on their roster behind starter C.J. Beathard and backup Nick Mullens.

Powell is expected to be active for Sunday’s game against the Rams. He will wear No. 30. Powell has appeared in two games this season.
