SANTA CLARA – The “Rookie Hype Machine” made its debut for practice on Friday to rave reviews.
During practices that are open to the public at the 49ers' training facility, a rookie is assigned the task of pumping up the crowd's energy level. Approximately 2,000 fans were in attendance.
Rookie right tackle Mike McGlinchey, the No. 9 overall pick, set the bar high for future rookies who will be required to provide the service. McGlinchey whipped the crowd into a frenzy as the team was going through stretching exercises.

“He surprised me,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said. “He went up in the stands and everything. I don’t think they were expecting that much hype. But his effort was good.
“Maybe tomorrow we can hype the offense up a little more instead of the fans.”
Shanahan did not like what he saw from the offense during the second practice of training camp. On the surface, quarterbacks Jimmy Garoppolo, C.J. Beathard and Nick Mullens completed more passes than on Day 1, but the execution was not nearly up to Shanahan’s standard.
“I thought we got off to a slow start,” Shanahan said. “We came out and had a couple of offsides early, had a couple of missed assignments early. We’re not calling plays out there right now. Everything is scripted, so you should know what’s being expected.

“Just a few mistakes early in practice and one thing leads to another. It’s hard to regain that. I want us to come out a little more focused early on. If you get beat, you get beat. I don’t want us to beat ourselves.”
Play of the Day
Backup quarterback C.J. Beathard and reserve wide receiver Max McCaffrey hooked up for the deepest completion of the first two days of training camp. McCaffrey got behind safety Chanceller James to make the catch approximately 40 yards down the field. Beathard made the throw into a steady breeze. On the next play, Beathard hit Kendrick Bourne with a perfectly thrown pass on a deep fade against cornerback Jimmie Ward.
Goodwin Annoyed? No, Just Bugged
After fumbling the ball away after catching a pass during a 7-on-7 period, receiver Marquise Goodwin appeared to be annoyed with himself. A short time later, he still appeared to be agitated and kicking the ground in disgust. “It was a really big bug,” Goodwin deadpanned. “I had to stomp it.”
Sherman Watch
Veteran cornerback Richard Sherman took part in the first two days of training camp after coming back from a torn Achilles. On Saturday, when the pads are scheduled to go on, the schedule calls for Sherman to take a day off. On Friday, Sherman again lined up at left cornerback. He backed off against Goodwin and surrendered a 15-yard completion on an out-route. Two plays later, Victor Bolden worked that side of the field for a completion at the sideline. After practice Sherman spent extra time working alongside cornerback Tyvis Powell on their techniques in bump-and-run coverage.
Injury Report
For the second day at the beginning of camp, the 49ers practiced without six players. Malcolm Smith (lower leg), Trent Taylor (back), Jonathan Cooper (knee), Dekoda Watson (calf), Kentavius Street (knee) and Marcell Harris (Achilles) all remain on injury lists. Each can be activated at any time, once cleared, to begin practicing. Street sustained an ACL tear during a pre-draft workout and is not expected to be available this season. Each of the other players appears close to being cleared.
This ‘n’ That
Garoppolo completed seven of nine passes to six different receivers. Goodwin caught two passes. Beathard was 8-for-8, with McCaffrey catching two passes. Mullens was 4-for-4. Bolden and Steven Dunbar caught three passes apiece. . . During 7-on-7 drills, safety Antone Exum tipped a Beathard pass intended for Dante Pettis up in the air and came down with the interception. . . . Mike Person opened practice at right guard with the first-team offense. Later, Joshua Garnett got onto the field, as the two shared practice snaps. Cooper will join the competition for the starting once he is cleared to being on-field work. . . . Pita Taumoepenu had back-to-back strong showings during one-on-one pass-rush drills against Pace Murphy. . . Bolden, D.J. Reed and Pettis worked as kickoff returners. . . Running back Matt Breida got out in space to show his speed in the open field. “When we do give him some space, he hits it hard and there were a few runs today we gave him a little bit of space,” Shanahan said. “And that’s why everyone saw him open it up a couple of times.” . . . Arik Armstead and DeForest Buckner had would-be sacks of Garoppolo during a three-plan span. Jeremiah Attaochu later got pressure on Beathard.
