San Jose's Andy Vences retained his WBC Continental Americas title on Friday night, grinding out a unanimous decision victory over Angel Hernandez in Lemoore, Calif.
Vences (18-0, 10 KO) fought most of the early rounds backing up, letting Hernandez walk into his counter attack. "El Tiburon" showed off his versatility, switching in and out of a southpaw stance - outpointing the rugged challenger with crisper, cleaner combinations.

By the seventh round, Vences was no longer concerned with Hernandez' power, and was even content to fight inside at times, punishing Hernandez with thudding body shots and the occasional uppercut through his opponent's guard.
After 10 rounds of action, Vences was awarded the unanimous decision victory (97-93, 99-91, 96-94). The Top Rank Boxing prospect will be content with the result, but it was not the stoppage victory he had predicted going in.
