In a statement issued by LAPD on Wednesday morning, the decision was made because "as the demands of the case become more complex and prolonged, RHD detectives will be better equipped to conduct the investigation."
The release also stated that it was "not unusual for RHD to take over investigative responsiblities of high-profile, prolonged and complex cases."
Giovanni Ramirez, 31, has been arrested and remains in custody as the primary suspect in the attack on Stow, but has not been charged. He is being held on a parole violation.
Ramirez was the subject of a lineup and lie-detector tests, but the results have not been released. Ramirez has two prior felony convictions.
Los Angeles police chief Charlie Beck said after the arrest that Ramirez is believed to be the "primary aggressor" in the March 31 assault.
Stow remains hospitalized at San Francisco General. His family released the following information on Tuesday regarding his condition:
Bryan has been sleepy the past two days. They are starting to lower the Dilantin seizure medication, and will start lowering the Phenobarbital soon. He has a window room now, which is perfect. We all know how Bryan likes the outdoors.
Police say they're still looking for a second attacker and a woman who drove their car.
