Editor's note: All week long. we'll answer questions that Bay Area sports fans long have debated in "Ever Wonder?" This segment: Where did Giants' Crazy Crab mascot come from?
Mascots typically are used to bring joy to sports fans, but it was the opposite objective for the Giants and their somewhat beloved Crazy Crab.
During its debut in 1984, fans actually were encouraged to “boo” the kooky crustacean when it would run onto the field, which was something not many mascots have ever seen.

The crab lasted just one year and the team wouldn’t have another mascot until their truly beloved Lou Seal was introduced.
Nobody booed Lou.

And while there have been returns of the crab, which included different giveaways, it hasn’t officially been back. There’s also a sandwich dedicated to it at Oracle Park.
