SANTA CLARA — The 49ers announced Saturday that they have placed running back Matt Breida and receiver Dante Pettis on injured reserve. In the corresponding roster moves, they promoted receiver Max McCaffrey and defensive lineman Ryan Delaire to the active roster from the practice squad.
There is potential for McCaffrey to get snaps, as the 49ers receiving group is currently quite thin. The team promoted Steven Dunbar from the practice squad earlier in the week as a result of Pettis being ruled out.
Receiver Marquise Goodwin was unable to practice through the week and was subsequently was ruled out for the game on Friday. The team needed to promote another receiver, and McCaffrey got the nod. Kendrick Bourne, Trent Taylor, and Richie James Jr. round out the young receiving group for the season finale.

McCaffrey has spent time on the practice squad with few NFL teams after playing his college career at Duke University. He was on the 49ers 53-man roster in December of 2017, but was inactive for the final three games of the season. He was on the 49ers practice squad during the 2018 offseason and waived at the end of August. He was signed to the practice squad again in late November.
McCaffrey will wear number 14. He is the brother of Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey.

It appears less likely that Delaire will get any defensive snaps on Sunday, unless the game starts to get lopsided. The defensive line has remained relatively healthy throughout the season, including several healthy scratches on game day.
Delaire attended Towson University after transferring from University of Massachusetts. He was originally signed to the 49ers practice squad on September 26, 2018 and was promoted to San Francisco’s active roster on October 6, 2018. He appeared in one game prior to being waived on October 15 and re-signed to the team’s practice squad two days later.
Delaire will wear number 92.
