Cal hires Michalczik as offensive coordinator

BERKELEY (AP) -- Jeff Tedford isfollowing his first losing season at California with some sweepingchanges to his coaching staff.Cal announced Saturday night that JimMichalczik has been hired as offensive coordinator, replacing AndyLudwig after a disappointing 5-7 season. Ludwig moved on to the sameposition at San Diego State.Marcus Arroyo also was hired asquarterbacks coach, and associate head coach Ron Gould was promoted tothe run-game coordinator. Eric Kiesau will be the passing-gamecoordinator."I'm pleased to have been able to putour offensive coaching staff together in this structure," Tedford said."We have a talented and experienced group of coaches on the offensiveside of the ball that will work well together to provide effectivestrategy and leadership for our offensive game plan."The moves come after the Golden Bears failed to extend their run of seven straight bowl berths.Michalczik was the offensive linecoach for the Oakland Raiders the last two seasons. He also was theGolden Bears' offensive line coach from 2002-08 under Tedford."My entire family is excited andfired up to be returning to the Cal football program," said Michalczik,who also will coach the offensive line.Arroyo, a former San Jose Statequarterback, has spent the past eight seasons coaching at thecollegiate level. He was the offensive coordinator and quarterbackscoach for Wyoming the last two seasons."I hope that I can add to what Calalready is by bringing my energy, enthusiasm and knowledge for the gameof football and specifically the quarterback position," Arroyo said.This offseason has been all about change on Cal's staff.Defensive backs coach Al Simmonsleft to pursue other opportunities and wide receivers coach Kevin Daftwill not return in 2011. And there's still a lot of work to do on thefield after the program's first losing season since a 1-10 showing in2001 - especially with three straight tough losses to end last year.Now that the offensive staff isassembled, the next task for Cal is figuring out who will playquarterback next season. Brock Mansion started five games after KevinRiley got hurt but will be in a competition with Beau Sweeney, AllanBridgford, Austin Hinder, transfer Zach Maynard and incoming freshmanKyle Boehm.
