The 1 team in the country, Virginia Cavaliers, scored two runs in the bottom of the 7th, and tacked on two more insurance runs in the 8th to defeat the Cal Bears, 4-1, in Game 1 of the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.

Cal's starting pitcher, Erik Johnson, a 2nd round pick in the June 2011 MLB Draft, lasted just three innings despite allowing zero runs. He walked five batters but battled and was able to pitch his way out of trouble.
Reliever Logan Scott pitched the middle three innings and into the 7th, but was replaced by closer, Matt Flemer, after the first two Cavaliers reached base in the 7th. Flemer retired the first batter he faced, but John Hicks, a 4th round pick of the Mariners, delivered an RBI single to break the scoreless tie.
Virginia left-hander, Danny Hultzen, the 2nd overall pick in the June 2011 MLB Draft, allowed just three hits in 6.1 innings of work, striking out six Cal batters.
The Bears will next play on Tuesday at 11:00am PDT against the loser of the Texas A&M vs. South Carolina matchup. South Carolina defeated UCLA in last year's College World Series championship series.
