A's right-hander Tyson Ross left Thursday's start against the visiting Minnesota Twins after just seven pitches with what was diagnosed as a left oblique strain.

Ross, 24, was making his sixth start in the rotation in place of the injured Dallas Braden, who underwent season-ending surgery Tuesday to repair a tear in his left (pitching) shoulder capsule.

Left-hander David Purcey replaced Ross on the mound against the Twins.

Ross was 2-0 in his previous four starts with a 1.69 ERA and 18 strikeouts.

With oblique strains tending to be lengthy injuries, and the A's in the middle of a 20-games-in-20-days stretch, it makes sense to look at Triple-A Sacramento for potential replacements.

Left-hander Josh Outman is 4-1 with a 4.78 ERA for the River Cats while right-hander Guillermo Moscoso is 3-2 with a 4.02 ERA and right-hander Graham Godfrey is 4-0 with a 2.43 ERA.

Outman, coming back from Tommy John surgery in 2009, and Moscoso are both on the A's 40-man roster.

Lefty Bobby Cramer, who made the A's opening day roster, is in Sacramento and was scheduled to start tonight, is also a consideration, though he was placed on the disabled list. He will be replaced by Godfrey. The rest of the River Cats' scheduled rotation: Friday - Travis Banwart, Saturday - Yadel Marti, Sunday - Outman, Monday - Moscoso.

Ross' spot comes up in the rotation again Tuesday in Anaheim.
