OAKLAND -- The Oakland As reinstated right-handed pitcher Grant Balfour from the paternity leave list and designated infielder Andy LaRoche for assignment, the club announced today.
LaRoche was batting .247 with no home runs and five RBI in 40 games for the As. He started 28 games at four different positions (17 at third base, five at second base, five at shortstop, one at first base). The starts at shortstop were the first of his career.

Balfour is 3-1 with a save and a 2.92 ERA in 25 relief appearances for Oakland. He is tied for third among American League relievers in wins and tied for 10th in strikeouts (28) and walks (13). Balfour has held the opposition to a .205 batting average, including .171 against left-handed hitters and .083 with runners in scoring position.
