A's prospect Jemile Weeks was called up to spell the veteran Ellis, but Weeks has provided Bob Melvin's team such a spark that there is no guarantee he will cede the starting job when Ellis returns.
The A's have not verbalized their plans yet.
Ellis is eligible to come off the disabled list on Wednesday, June 22.
