Sonny Dykes and his Cal Bears have to replace the NFL's No. 1 draft pick in quarterback Jared Goff. And they received reinforcements to their quarterback competition with grad transfer Davis Webb from Texas Tech University.
Webb will compete with redshirt sophomore Chase Forrest, redshirt freshman Ross Bowers, and true freshman Victor Viramontes, to take over the helm with Goff gone. Early on, Webb's work ethic has already blown away Dkyes as the 21-year-old looks for one more chance to impress NFL scouts.
"You know, I think what's been most impressive to everybody, his teammates, coaches, everybody, has just been his work ethic," Dykes said Friday at Pac-12 Media Day.

Webb threw for over 5,500 yards in three seasons with the Red Raiders and tossed 46 touchdowns. He only attempted 41 passes last season as he was sidelined with an ankle injury and lost his job.

In June, Webb started his master's program on the Berkeley campus and Dykes raved about his will to learn since coming on campus.
"Since he got on campus, he comes to work at 7:00 a.m. and leaves at 10:00 p.m. That's what he does every day," Dykes explained to the media.
Dykes' 'Bear Raid' spread offense is similar to the one Webb ran at Texas Tech. Whoever wins the competition, Dykes feels confident in the team's future with their success in the past under center.
"I'm confident that we'll have a good quarterback. I mean, our quarterbacks have always performed well, and I don't expect anything different this year," Dykes concluded.
Cal opens up its schedule with a game unlike any other program. The Bears will play Hawaii on Aug. 26 at Anz Stadium in Sydney, Australia.
