Kings bring back popular California Classic tournament

For two straight summers, the California Classic was a hit for the Sacramento Kings. A tune-up to the Las Vegas Summer League, the Cal Classic was put on hold last year due to the coronavirus pandemic, but it's back.

On Wednesday morning, the Kings announced the return of the two-day event. The tournament will feature teams from the Kings, Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat and Los Angeles Lakers and is set to run on August 3-4 with double-headers running each day.

“We are excited to once again host fans in full capacity for the California Classic at Golden 1 Center,” Sacramento Kings Owner and Chairman Vivek Ranadivé said via press release. "In addition to the high energy games we have come to expect from the Classic, fans will enjoy world-class entertainment and community activations.”

Two-day passes for the event go on sale on July 8 for season ticket holders and they hit the open market on July 12.  One-day passes will go on sale to the general public on July 20.

Protocols to the Cal Classic will follow what we saw from the team late in the season when fans were allowed in the building. Guests will need to either self attest that they are vaccination 14 days prior to the event or received a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of arriving at the arena.

This is a perfect kick-off to the summer schedule. First and second-year players, as well as veterans trying to get into the league, will compete under modified rules, including 10 minute quarters.

There is no word on whether Tyrese Haliburton will play in the event, but it will be a good chance for players like Robert Woodard III, Jahmi'us Ramsey and Louis King to show what they can do as they prep for Las Vegas. It's also a first look at the Kings' draft picks, just days after their selection during the July 29 NBA Draft.

Tickets start at just $39 for a two-day pass.
