Keegan Murray knew there was a lot of anticipation leading up to him breaking the single-season rookie record for most 3-pointers.
The 22-year-old’s third triple in Sacramento’s 120-80 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday night at Moda Center allowed him to stand alone on the mountaintop. Still, he’s glad the record chase is over.
“I think it was cool just because you don’t have really anyone asking about you anymore when you’re going to break it,” Murray told Sactown Sports 1140’s Carmichael Dave and Jason Ross. “I think that was the biggest thing. But it was cool to be there.
“And my teammate’s reaction was pretty cool as well. So everyone’s excited and in fact, we got to clinch a playoff spot too; that same night was special.”
Murray’s teammates weren’t the ones excited to see the Iowa product reach the milestone, as Kings coach Mike Brown was eager to witness the historic 3-pointer.
“I’m excited,” Brown recently told reporters. “You know, like I said before, you know, an attempt to break that record should mean something to everybody. You know, it’s a phenomenal record to break. Obviously, the guy that has it right now is a phenomenal player and going to be in the Hall of Fame.

“And so when you start talking about those types of things and something that is there in the record books and talking about the history of the game, it’s no small feat. And so you look forward to any year, guys have an opportunity to put their imprint on the game in a way that Keegan will once he breaks that record.”

Murray and the Kings now can put the record and 16-season NBA playoff drought behind them as the team eyes a deep postseason run.
