Domas named Player of the Week to boost All-Star case

Domantas Sabonis isn't getting much love in NBA All-Star voting, but the Kings center has played well enough recently to earn Western Conference Player of the Week on Monday.

In four games last week, Sabonis averaged 18.5 points, 14.3 rebounds and 10.3 assists, helping the Kings go 4-0 during the stretch. Sacramento currently is six games over .500 and sits in fourth place in the West entering play Monday.

The highlight of Sabonis' week came Friday night in a win over the Houston Rockets when he finished with 19 points, 16 assists and 15 rebounds, becoming the first Kings player with a 15-15-15 game since Oscar Robertson on Jan. 6, 1965.

In capturing his third career Player of the Week honor and first since joining the Kings, Sabonis beat out teammate Harrison Barnes, reigning two-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokić, Damian Lillard, Ja Morant, Josh Giddy and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for the award.

Sabonis has been putting up dominant, All-Star worthy numbers in his first full season with the Kings, averaging 18.9 points, an NBA-best 12.6 rebounds and 7.1 assists in 41 games while playing with an avulsion fracture in his right thumb. He has recorded a double-double in 20 straight games, the fifth-longest streak in the NBA since 2012-13.

And while Sabonis is doing all this on the court, he hasn't garnered enough All-Star votes to crack the top 10 among Western Conference frontcourt players through two rounds of voting.

Sabonis has played at an elite level this 2022-23 NBA season, but he'll have to hope current players and media members can send him to Salt Lake City for his third career All-Star appearance.
