Brown reveals differing plans for two key starting spots

With less than two weeks before the Kings' 2022-23 NBA season opener, coach Mike Brown has tough roster decisions coming up.

However, the starting shooting guard spot is not one of them.

"The more I watch it, I just think Kevin [Huerter] might be the right fit at that two-guard spot," Brown told reporters following Sacramento's practice Friday (h/t FOX 40 Sacramento's Sean Cunningham).

Throughout the offseason, the Kings had an option of either starting Huerter, who they recently traded for, or their free-agent signing Malik Monk.

By penciling in the 6-foot-7 Huerter as the starter next to De'Aaron Fox, the Kings have someone who is capable of staying in front of bigger guards while also being able to rise up and shoot over smaller defenders.

With the starting two-guard spot filled, attention then turns to who will fill the Kings' open power forward spot. Brown says that for the time being, the coaching staff will fill the position by committee.

"For me, that power forward spot can be wide open," Brown continued. "Could be wide open from the standpoint that, 'Hey tonight, we may need this, tomorrow night, we may need that.' "

"Having the versatility on the team to be able to do that from time to time for me is a positive for being a head coach."

Brown concluded by saying that the Kings will wait for another game or two before making roster cuts.

As it stands, we know the Kings will be rolling out Fox, Huerter, Harrison Barnes, and Domantas Sabonis in their season opener against the Portland Trail Blazers on Oct. 19 at Golden 1 Center.

Regarding the power forward spot, Brown can elect to go with rookie Keegan Murray, who recently had a 16-point, six-rebound showing against the Los Angeles Lakers on Oct. 3.

Or, the Kings coach can choose to start veterans Trey Lyles or Chimezie Metu to round out the starting five.

With the season fast approaching, Brown is making sure he puts the right group of players together for the season.

Kings fans are hopeful the group he puts on the floor is the one that leads to success.
