Why Jefferson calls any Wiseman trade speculation ‘stupid'

Highly-touted Warriors rookie James Wiseman suffered a tough blow when he tore his meniscus last weekend, and he will undergo surgery on his right knee Thursday.

So what does this mean for Golden State? Well, fans shouldn't have any crazy thoughts, at least according to ESPN’s Richard Jefferson.

“Hey Warrior fans, don’t be stupid,” Jefferson said on ESPN’s "The Jump" recently. “Remember when they were talking about Klay Thompson being traded for Kevin Love?”

Some Wariors fans believe Wiseman should be traded for an All-Star-level player who could fit in alongside Steph Curry, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson when he returns next season.

It’s understandable to an extent as Wiseman has dealt with a few injuries and has made some rookie mistakes this season. He struggled on both sides of the ball and did that while the Warriors were trying to develop him and contend for a playoff spot.

Obviously, Jefferson disagrees.

The Klay/Love trade that didn’t happen ultimately came down to the Warriors not wanting to part with Thompson back in 2014. That decision clearly was the right one.

Jefferson added Wiseman is a “very special player and he’s going to be a very special player for a long time.”

In 39 games this season, Wiseman averaged 11.5 points and 5.8 rebounds per game.

If a Wiseman trade were to take place in the offseason (it shouldn't), Jefferson believes there are very few players who would make a move worth it.

“You want to maximize Steph (Curry), but there’s probably only two players – maybe a Bradley Beal, maybe somebody else,” Jefferson said. “There’s not too many players out there that you would actually warrant a trade.”

Draymond’s done a solid job taking Wiseman under his wing, so we know they’re willing to put the work in to maximize the abilities of the young center.

It's unclear when or if Wiseman will return this season, but Jefferson firmly believes the Warriors shouldn't even think about trading him this summer.
