Draymond Green had his No. 23 Michigan State jersey retired on Dec. 3, 2019.
But the ceremony was supposed to happen three years earlier.
The three-time NBA champion revealed the following story during an appearance on Showtime's "All the Smoke" Podcast with Stephen Jackson and Matt Barnes:

"Coach (Tom) Izzo wanted to retire my jersey in 2016. I'll remind you -- 2016 was a very rough year for me. I got suspended from Game 5 of the Finals, and then about three weeks later I slapped the s--t out of a guy at Michigan State and I got arrested. And then about two-and-a-half weeks later -- I f--king had a Snapchat incident.
"All that s--t happened within six weeks. It was like the roughest six weeks of my life. So Coach Izzo called me a couple months later -- obviously I was talking to him all through that -- but a couple months later he was like, 'I want to retire your jersey here.' And I'm like, 'Coach, f--k that place. I'm never coming back there. The guy f--king charged me and s--t and I slap him and I get arrested. I'm never f--king coming back to East Lansing.'
"So I kind of said no in 2016 just being a hothead and not understanding the honor. And then coach told me last September, 'Yo, you need to f--king pick a date, I'm retiring the jersey.' And we ended up finding a date that worked perfect."
That must have been really tough for Draymond, because he has said going to Michigan State was the best decision of his life (he nearly went to rival Michigan).

After all, back in September 2015 -- a couple months after he signed a five-year, $82 million extension with the Warriors -- he donated $3.1 million to his alma mater.
It sounds like all parties involved are on good terms again, and that's a good thing for everybody.
