What Grant Liffmann misses most about sports amid coronavirus hiatus

Editor's note: Like you, Bay Area athletes and NBC Sports Bay Area insiders, reporters and analysts are feeling the sports void during the coronavirus stoppage. They'll share their thoughts twice a week in "What I Miss About Sports." Next up in the series: Warriors Outsider Grant Liffmann.

Let me first start by saying I fully agree and support the NBA and all the other professional sports leagues in their decisions to postpone all sporting events. This pandemic is a world crisis that needs quick, decisive action and suspending sports was just one tiny puzzle piece in a uniquely necessary societal shutdown.

Having said that, do I miss sports? Hell yes I do. There are very few benefits to being stuck at home without anything to do, and one of those is the ability to sit down, turn on the TV, and throw on a game. Having now worked in sports media for the last three years, I have not had many opportunities to watch Warriors games at home as a casual spectator. It looks like I will not have that opportunity for quite awhile.

But more than just watching the games, I miss the conversations that ensue. Nothing brings my friends together more than a cordial argument about the worth of a player, the greatness of a team or the truth of a trade rumor. Sports has always been my favorite hobby, which I have been so lucky enough to convert into a full-time job. Partially because I can enjoy it on my own, but more because I can share it with everyone else.

With all the anxiety, stress, pain and confusion in the world right now, sports would have been a welcome escape from reality. Yes, for Warriors fans it has been a disappointing season, but there has been so much reason for optimism for the team moving forward. That optimism, or simply distraction, is sorely missed.

Perhaps when this is all over and sports return there will be a rejuvenation of interest. Longing fans, desperately craving their sporting fix, could turn on the TV in spades. However more than anything, hopefully, there is a real appreciation for life and the luxuries that we are afforded on an everyday basis, and that includes communal entertainment and bonding of sports.
