Warriors' starters will be based on matchups with Draymond out

SAN FRANCISCO -- Steve Kerr said exactly one week ago that Jonathan Kuminga will be the Warriors' starting power forward as Draymond Green remains out with a back injury. That was after Kuminga earned his first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds in a 16-point win over the Detroit Pistons.

But there's always a catch.

"Don't hold me to it, though. I could always change," Kerr said as he declared Kuminga the starter.

That lasted all of one game.

Kuminga started two days later against the Indiana Pacers, but was a minus-16 in plus-minus and didn't have a single field goal attempt. Otto Porter Jr. has started the past two games for the Warriors, and that will continue Tuesday night against the Dallas Mavericks.

"Without Draymond right now, and with a minutes restriction with Klay [Thompson] and Andre [Iguodala] and Otto not playing back-to-backs, it's been a little bit of play-it-by-ear type of stuff and it just feels like we need to try and find some continuity when we can," Kerr said Tuesday night in his pregame press conference.

Porter has played exceptionally well in the Warriors' past two games as their starting power forward. He has scored 13 points in both contests, has averaged 7.5 rebounds and has gone 4-for-8 from 3-point range and 10-for-15 overall from the field.

Wade knocks Butler's ‘bad offense' in Warriors' playoff elimination

Do Steph, Warriors need more shooting after postseason struggles?

His shooting ability has to be a big reason why Kerr is starting the veteran forward, especially with Thompson on his minutes' restriction and Steph Curry struggling with his own shot.

"I'm going to start this way tonight and see if we can get a little of the momentum out of it and we'll go from there, but as long as Draymond is out, I think anything is on the table based on matchups," Kerr said.

He also wanted to make it clear this isn't a punishment to the Warriors' 19-year-old rookie.

"I think JK has played really well, so it's not an indictment on him, it's more just trying to find combinations that make sense for the game," Kerr said. "We are just trying to find ways to win basically while we have guys out."
