Warriors smash 3-pointers record, on ‘forefront' of new NBA

OAKLAND – The Warriors have officially crowned themselves kings of the trey.

With Klay Thompson and Steph Curry leading the way, the Warriors made 21 shots from 3-point distance Friday night to raise their season total to 938, surpassing the 2014-15 Rockets (933) for most 3-pointers in a season.

With 10 games remaining after this 128-120 victory over the Mavericks at Oracle Arena, it’s likely the Warriors drain more than 1,000 shots from beyond the arc.

“Oh, wow, that’s pretty sweet,” said Klay Thompson, whose game-high 40 points included nine shots from deep. “The game is kind of changing,” he added, “and I think we're on the forefront of that. Our team’s shooting ability is second to none. As long as we just play within ourselves, trust each other, we’ll get good shots and we’ll knock them down.”

Thompson was 9-of-16 from deep. Steph Curry was 5-of-12 and Draymond Green was 3-of-5 beyond the arc. The Warriors for the first time this season took more 3-pointers than 2-pointers, going 21-of-45 from deep and 22-of-43 inside the arc.

“We’re a really good-shooting team,” Green said. “That’s kind of a staple in this club. We get them up, and we’re able to knock them down.

“So that’s really not a shocker. With the two shooters we have it’s kind of expected.”

Curry, who leads the league with 348 3-pointers, credited the team’s offensive concepts for getting so many players open looks from 3-point range. Six Warriors have made at least 50 and three others have 20 or more.

“It’s not just one guy,” Curry said. “When we get the ball moving the way we do and execute, and highlight all the different talents we have in this locker room, good things happen.

“We want to continue that going forward. It’s pretty special. We have some great shooters on this team and it’s fun, the way we play.”
