Steph Curry travels with Warriors, but has ‘long way to go' in rehab

LOS ANGELES -- Following Warriors shoot-around Friday morning, injured guard Stephen Curry participated in an extended shooting workout, providing a familiar sight for a battered team.

"It's like riding a bike," Warriors coach Steve Kerr said as Curry shot. "He's going to be able to shoot until he's 85."

The post-practice workout marked the first road appearance for the former NBA MVP -- whose broken left hand will be re-evaluated Feb. 1 -- since he sustained the injury in October.

While Curry's presence is noteworthy, the team is expressing caution.

"He looks great, but there’s a long way to go for him to heal and be ready to play the game," Kerr said. "He just started to really get on the court and shooting and moving around, so he’s got a long way to go, but it’s good to see him out there."

Throughout the roughly 40-minute session, Curry -- alongside teammate Draymond Green -- went through a shootout similar to his pregame routine, including 3-point shots and mid-range jumpers, before finishing off with free throws. Curry's workout went so long that Kerr walked across the gym to inquire if he'd ride the bus back to the team hotel or find his own transportation.

Friday's workout was Curry's second in front of reporters in two days. Following Thursday's practice in San Francisco, he shot alongside guard Alec Burks prior to the Warriors' flight to LA.

The timing of Curry's increased participation is noteworthy.  Last month, he underwent a second surgery to remove pins in his left hand. Nonetheless, Kerr said wasn't shocked by his guard's progress.

"Nothing really surprises me with Steph," Kerr said. "The guy is so skilled. To be honest, even not picking up the ball for two months, I expect him to make every shot. So, it didn’t surprise me watching him work out."

As for when Curry will return for game action, Kerr told Yahoo! Sports' Chris Haynes that the guard should expect to return sometime in March. Curry's injury, along with fellow guard Klay Thompson's knee rehab, has caused the Warriors to slip to a 9-30 record entering Friday night's meeting with the Clippers.

Despite their extended absences, Kerr said, both players are in good spirits under the circumstances.

"They're just rehabbing and doing their best to stay engaged and stay positive and staying positive, but it's frustrating," he said. "They're doing their best and they want to play."
