Sources: Mike Brown among Kings' head coaching candidates

Mike Brown hasn't been a head coach in the NBA since the 2013-14 season, but that could change this offseason.

Brown is among the candidates for the Kings' head coaching vacancy, multiple NBA sources confirmed to NBC Sports Bay Area's Monte Poole on Friday.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski first reported Friday that Brown was among a lengthy list of candidates the Kings had received permission to interview. Citing a source, Wojnarowski reported that other candidates are Brooklyn Nets consultant Steve Clifford, Milwaukee Bucks assistant coaches Darvin Ham and Charles Lee, and Boston Celtics assistant Will Hardy.

The Athletic's Shams Charania and Sam Amick reported, citing sources, that former Warriors head coach Mark Jackson and longtime NBA coach Mike D'Antoni also are candidates for the Kings' job.

Yahoo Sports' Chris Haynes reported Friday, citing league sources, that Jackson will interview with the Kings next week.

Brown has spent the last six seasons as an assistant on coach Steve Kerr's staff, helping the Warriors win NBA titles in 2016-17 and 2017-18. He spent the summer coaching the Nigerian national team in the 2022 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

Brown first became an NBA head coach with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2005-06. He guided them to the NBA Finals in his second season where the team led by LeBron James lost to the San Antonio Spurs. He was fired by the Cavs following the 2009-10 season and after a year off, he was hired by the Los Angeles Lakers ahead of the 2011-12 season as the replacement for Phil Jackson.

Brown's tenure in LA didn't last long as he was fired five games into the 2012-13 season. He was rehired by the Cavs for the 2013-14 season but was fired after Cleveland went 33-49 that season.

The Warriors hired Brown ahead of the 2016 season and he has been sitting next to Kerr ever since.

But if Brown impresses the Kings' front office and ownership group, he could be heading up Interstate 80 in the near future.
