Klay saves one of best halves of year for season finale

A day of rest in San Antonio did Klay Thompson good as the Warriors' star came out firing in the first half against the New Orleans Pelicans in the season finale on Sunday at Smoothie King Center.

Thompson led all scorers with 21 first-half points as the Warriors took a commanding 68-48 lead into the locker room in a game they needed to win in order to lock up the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference.

Klay was so hot he had 10 of the Warriors' first 12 points, reaching double figures just over four minutes into the game. He finished the half 8-of-15 from the field and 4-of-9 from beyond the 3-point line.

Thompson didn't play in the front end of the Warriors' back-to-back with the Spurs and Pelicans, but that will be the last time he has to sit out a game this season due to rest. Once the NBA playoffs begin next weekend, there are no more back-to-backs. That has to be music to Klay's ears.

How Warriors tied franchise history with successful homestand

The 21 points by Thompson are tied for his fifth-most points he has scored in a half this season. He scored 21 in the first half against the Milwaukee Bucks on March 12. He also has halves of 22, 23 (twice) and 24 points this season.

Thompson is peaking at the right time and this will be the player the Warriors need when they open the first round of the playoffs against the Utah Jazz or Denver Nuggets.
