Klay: Iguodala's return to Warriors would be ‘welcomed sight'

Klay Thompson really misses Andre Iguodala.

The Warriors veteran hasn’t played since Feb. 7 thanks to a back injury, but Steve Kerr said the team is “hopeful” he can return to the court Monday night against the Memphis Grizzlies.

When Thompson heard the news following the Warriors’ 123-115 loss to the Washington Wizards at Capitol One Arena on Sunday, he lit up at the potential to play with the 2015 NBA Finals MVP once again.

“Wow,” Thompson said. “That would be a welcomed sight.”

It’s been 22 games since the two Golden State veterans have played together, and absence certainly makes the heart grow fonder. Thompson had nothing but praise for his teammate during Sunday’s postgame press conference.

“He’s so smart. He’s always in the right position defensively,” Thompson said. “Offensively he does the same thing like on the defensive end, making the right plays and knocking down clutch, clutch shots and just being Andre Iguodala. A Finals MVP and a guy who’s been so valuable to this franchise and I’m just very excited he’s coming back.”

Butler's pelvic injury puts Warriors' NBA playoff dreams in peril

Iguodala’s most recent injury and swelling in his knee earlier this season have led to the 38-year-old appearing in just 26 games in 2021-2022. During that time, he is averaging 4.1 points, 3.8 assists and 3.3 rebounds in 19.9 minutes per contest.

The Warriors signed Iguodala to the veteran’s minimum this offseason with an eye on the postseason, and it looks like he could return just in time to make an impact. The playoffs are familiar territory for Thompson and Iguodala, as the pair both served crucial roles in the Warriors’ three championship runs.

“I really miss playing with him,” Thompson said.

Should Iguodala return with no setbacks, they’ll look to win a fourth championship together.
