Kevon Looney explains why recent injury was most frustrating of career

The 2019-20 season has not gone according to plan for Warriors forward Kevon Looney.

The "foundational piece" -- who signed a three-year contract worth $15 million last July with Golden State -- has been limited to just 12 games because of various injuries.

He recently missed 18 straight games because of an abdominal strain.

"Had a few injuries in my career, but this one was definitely the most frustrating," Looney told Anthony Slater of The Athletic after the team's shootaround Monday. "Because I’m coming off an injury, get hurt again. Kills your confidence.

"It was hard for me. I didn’t know how long I’d be out, what the timeline is ... it got to a point where one game I played — right before the Christmas game against Houston — I couldn’t even walk that good. I could barely get out of bed."

Pretty strong stuff from a guy who has had surgery on both of his hips.

Looney finally returned last Saturday against the Cleveland Cavaliers, playing nearly 13 minutes off the bench.

Against the Washington Wizards on Monday night, he recorded two points, four rebounds, three assists and one steal in less than 10 minutes of action. He also showed off his strong perimeter defense, stonewalling Bradley Beal at the end of the third quarter.

"I feel a lot better than when I came back the first time," Looney said. "I just didn’t really get a chance to get a rhythm. Then I got hurt again. But now, I feel a lot better, a lot quicker, a lot stronger.

"I just want to get my body back right. I just want to get back to feeling like an athlete again. Didn’t get to play much in the summer because of the upper-body injury. Training camp, I couldn’t play because of my hamstring. Then the abdominal strain.

Warriors' season was incomplete win with Steph watching from sidelines

"So I just want to get back to feeling like an athlete, get my confidence back in myself and my game and then have a good summer."

But will he still be a member of the Warriors when the NBA trade deadline hits this week?

Various reports have suggested that Golden State might look to part ways with the soon-to-be 24-year-old (his birthday is Thursday) in order to avoid the dreaded "repeater tax" this season and next.

It would be surprising to see Looney traded, but you never know. Obviously, he wants to stay with the Dubs.

"You get paid and you want to prove your worth," he told Slater. "You want to show the team they made a smart investment in you ... but injuries kind of killed my momentum. Kind of killed my spirit, honestly.

"But I’m glad I signed a long-term deal and will have a chance to prove myself again next year."
