Kerr thinks Steph ‘definitely the MVP' after outburst vs. OKC

Steve Kerr is biased and he should be.

If you were Steph Curry’s coach and watched him work on a daily basis, you’d probably think he was the NBA MVP, too. Following Curry’s mesmerizing 49-point outburst against Oklahoma City in Saturday’s 136-97 win, Kerr said he thinks Curry should win his third career MVP.

“Of course I do,” Kerr said. “I get to watch this show every single night. I have just so much admiration for what Steph does every single night. Not only on the floor, but the way he carries himself and the way he is an example for all of his teammates. He’s definitely the MVP in my book and we’ll see what happens.”

All season long, Kerr has touted Curry’s level of play, saying it's on par or better than his MVP seasons in 2014-15 and 2015-16.

The Warriors coach thinks Curry’s ridiculous production since the April should put him in the conversation with the league’s other top MVP candidates. In 19 games since returning from his tailbone injury, Curry is averaging 37.5 points while making 6.9 3-pointers per contest.

“I think these last few weeks have to have at least vaulted him up in the order,” Kerr said. “But we’ll see if he can climb to first or not. It would be great to see it happen.”

The problem for Curry is the Warriors are 12-7 in that span and just 35-33 overall. NBA MVP voters historically like to reward winning and Nikola Jokic is the runaway favorite to claim the award this year, as the center is averaging 26.4 points, 10.9 rebounds and 8.5 assists per game for the 44-24 Denver Nuggets.

Joel Embiid and Giannis Antetokounmpo also might garner some votes with Curry, but it appears Jokic has a solid grasp on this year’s top individual accolade.

For now, Curry might have to be content with being the 2020-21 scoring champion, as he kept Washington Wizards guard Bradley Beal at bay with Saturday’s monster first-quarter performance.
