Kerr returning to Warriors this week seems unlikely

OAKLAND – Though there remains no timetable for Steve Kerr return to full-time coaching duties for the Warriors, it’s unlikely to happen this week.

“He seems like he’s doing better,” interim head coach Luke Walton said during his pregame news conference, two hours before tipoff against the Miami Heat. “But he’s still not ready to take over.

“When that day comes, we will all be thrilled. But that day is not today. We, including himself, I don’t think know.”

Kerr took a leave of absence on Sept. 30 in the wake of a painful reaction to multiple back surgeries last summer. He has been a fairly constant presence at home games and road games over the past three weeks, but Walton was uncertain of his Kerr’s travel plans this week.

The Warriors on Tuesday travel to Denver to face the Nuggets on Wednesday, and then return home to face the Lakers on Thursday at Oracle Arena before leaving Friday for a three-game trip to Detroit, Cleveland and Chicago.

“I’m pretty sure he’s coming on the long one,” Walton said, referring to the Midwest journey. “But I’m not sure about the one-day trip to Denver; that wouldn’t make a ton of sense with how much travel that is for just one day – especially with the longer trip coming up right behind it.
