Kerr identifies biggest challenge facing Warriors this season

The Warriors' final game before the 2019-20 season was shut down because of the pandemic was on March 10.

When they take the floor Saturday night in their 2020-21 preseason opener, they will be nine months and two days removed from their last game.

So what is the biggest challenge facing Steve Kerr and his squad this season?

"Trying to bring a team together in such a short span," Kerr told the media Friday afternoon. "It takes time for players to get to know one another, to get comfortable playing as a five-man unit -- both offensively and defensively.

"And we're trying to do it in a really quick training camp, and we're doing it after nine months off. So it's almost like we're starting the race a little bit behind. Especially the teams that were in the bubble -- they had a lot of extra time.

"And I don't use that as an excuse, I use it just to give you the answer you're looking for in terms of what's the biggest challenge. We're trying to put together a team on the fly pretty quickly. And it's not easy."

Complicating matters further is the fact Draymond Green and James Wiseman have missed all of training camp as they await full clearance to return to the court.

Kerr said it is "highly unlikely" that either of them suits up for any of the team's three preseason games, and the regular-season opener on Dec. 22 against the Brooklyn Nets is just 11 days away.

In a nutshell, Warriors fans need to remain patient and not rush to judgment on anything until the sample size is large enough to form conclusions.

"If we do get off to a slow start, it wouldn't be that surprising," Kerr said. "I hope I'm wrong. Maybe we get off to a quick start ... but we probably will be a little rusty.

"But over the course of the year, I'm really excited about this team's possibility for growth and improvement."
